The 470 mile parkway started in the early 1930s during the Great Depression, was completed in 1987. It was designed specifically for leisurely motor travel and relaxing recreation, running between Shenandoah National Park and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Sections are often closed for weather or construction so it can be tough to drive the entire length in one trip. Even then, there is plenty to do if sections are closed. Here is what I have done so far, much more to go back and do.

The Linn Cove Viaduct hugs the face of Grandfather Mountain and is recognized internationally as an engineering marvel. This was the last section of the Parkway to be completed and a model of the construction technique is in the Linn Cove Visitor Center.
