Serving as an entrance to the Linville Gorge Wilderness Area, Linville Falls is considered one of the most spectacular attractions on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Linville Gorge was the nation's first officially designated wilderness area. Linville Falls is only accessible by trail and protected by the National Park Service. The trails include four overlooks of the waterfalls. The steep-walled Gorge is known as the Grand Canyon of the Southern Appalachians. The Visitor Center hosts 350,000 visitors annually. Linville Falls is probably the most famous waterfall on the Blue Ridge Parkway but swimming in the water is not allowed.
