Shenandoah National Park Lookouts
WillhiteWeb.com
Shenandoah National Park had 6 fire lookouts within the boundaries. Also, one just outside the park boundary line (Fork Mountain) that they seem to have been managing.
These images below are from the park archives but it is not clear which lookout they go to. Given the limited number of lookouts in the park we should be able to figure it out. By deduction, they are from Lewis Peak, Hightop or Trayfoot Mountain.
Between the years 1936 and 1939 the Forest Service took panoramic photographs of vistas from 27 locations within the Shenandoah National Park and the surrounding region. The sites had either existing fire tower lookouts or were proposed locations for fire tower lookouts. If you know where I can find these images, please contact me.
Shenandoah National Park stopped regularly manning its five lookout towers by the late 1950s. It was found that with the use of radio-equipped vehicles, fire control aides could sufficiently accomplish their duties in fire detection to the same capacity as with the lookout towers. By the early 1960s, the park began to dismantle, scrap, or sell the five lookout towers it had at that time.
