AT Lookouts
This is the first lookout site on the AT if you skip the approach trail. The AT no longer goes up and over the summit but does a traverse around in order to maintain a fairly level elevation.

In 1935, the lookout is marked on maps. The old AT went up and over.

In 1972, a USGS party placed a benchmark in the northwest lookout tower footing calling it HAWK 1972. They said the lookout was a destroyed lookout tower.

Access:
I left the Appalachian Trail when I hit the base mountain at the northwest ridge. The bushwhack was fairly easy terrain. From the summit, the old trail does drop down to the AT on the east side to where some official trail camps are located.
