AT Lookouts
Blood Mountain is the highest peak on the Georgia section of the Appalachian Trail and the sixth tallest mountain in Georgia. On the summit is a shelter built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. They also made many improvements to the trail.

In 1927, several newspaper articles had a discussion about building a trail from Neel Gap to the summit of Blood Mountain and replacing a wooden platform with a modern permanent lookout.

In 1930, B. M. Lufburrow, state forester and chairman of the American Legions committee directed a campaign for a $10,000 World War memorial fire tower on Blood Mountain. The first contribution was from the womens auxiliary unit of the Quitman post.

It appears the campaign did not accomplish its goal and the simple wooden platform was all that ever existed on Blood Mountain.
