Upper New York on the Appalachian Trail would be from the Hudson River (the lowest point on the AT) to the boundary with Connecticut and official entry into New England. This area can be very enjoyable or just miserable, depending on how you are doing. Other than the beginning in the first 500 miles, this area came next for depressed hikers questioning their resolve to finish the trail. Thru-hikers have pushed through never ending Virginia, made it across the Pennsylvania rocks, but the hot days of summer are wearing them out and the amenities they just passed around the Hudson may just be breaking them mentally. The pictures below are some of the things I enjoyed in this section. Because I spent very little in towns, this area less wilderness was quite welcomed. There are many markets and deli shops within walking distance at road crossings.
