The Appalachian Trail in northern New Jersey, just after State Highpoint State Park, makes a dramatic direction shift, going southeast for 27 miles. The trail runs right along the border with New York, occasionally directly on the line. This scenic area is some of the easiest travel on the entire Appalachian Trail. Parts of the trail are in a state of change as private property abounds here. Still, the area is very scenic with the Wallkill National Wildlife Refuge, numerous farmers fields and the nearly mile long Pochuck Boardwalk across wetlands. After all that flat terrain, you hit the Wawayanda Ridge for a wakeup call that this is the Appalachian Trail, not some sissy walkabout.
