Kinsman Ridge Traverse
New Hampshire, Appalachian Trail
WillhiteWeb.com
As you approach the White Mountains, you hear a lot of talk about the difficulty of Mount Moosilauke. You prepare yourself for the climb and revel at the summit. But not too far after Moosalauke, you hit the Kinsman Ridge. This lesser discussed ridge is even more brutala and seems to come out of nowhere. The trail route is just terrible with steep and boulder rock sections. For those wearing a backpack, good luck, you have been warned. The South Kinsman Mountain summit is mostly open with views. Views include Mount Moosilauke, Franconia Ridge, and North Kinsman. On a clear day, you can see as far as Vermonts high peaks of Mt. Mansfield and Camel's Hump to the west.
North Kinsman Peak is mostly tree-covered with a short spur trail to a viewing ledge. The ledge looks eastward across Franconia Notch to Franconia Ridge, Lonesome Lake and Cannon Mountain.
