Hot Springs, North Carolina

At around mile 275, the Appalachian Trail passes right down the main street of Hot Springs, North Carolina. Other than the first few nights with my family at the beginning, this was my first non-camping night on the trail. I stayed at the Laughing Heart Lodge. Adjacent to the lodge was the Laughing Heart Hostel where I was able to get my laundry done and see a hostel for the first time on the trail. The town was a lifesaver for me because up to this point, I had been wearing trail runners that were too small for my enlarging feet. I purchased boots which I should never have stopped given I have been hiking in boots for 30 years with no issues. The re-supply in town was at the Dollar General and a small gas station grocery. I got my freeze-dried dinners at the outfitter I purchased my boots at. The next morning, hiking out of town was pleasant along the French Broad River, then up to some nice views on Lovers Leap Ridgeline.
