Southern New Hampshire
(Hanover to Lambart Ridge)
WillhiteWeb.com
Entering New Hampshire along the Appalachian Trail is very exciting. The state has the most time spent hiking above tree line by far. The mountains of Vermont have done their best to prepare thru-hikers for the Whites and by this time, hikers are ready to tackle them after all the hype. But New Hampshire first starts with a nice stroll though one of the largest trail towns on the trail, Hanover. Hikers have been known to get stuck in town, unwilling to keep going, knowing the difficult climbs ahead. But the Whites are still some distance away. For the 20 miles from Hanover to the base of Smarts Mountain, the terrain keeps low and the mountains are smaller. Some of the highlights are Velvet Rocks, Moose Mountain, Holts Ledge and Lambert Ridge.
Velvet Rock Shelter is just one mile distance out of the Hanover grocery store.
