Lookout History
In 1910, this site has a wood tower built.
In 1917, Frank W. Hilton, Bingham, Chief Warden, Upper Kennebec Region said that during the season they built a new night camp on Bald Mountain for the watchman, which was badly needed. They also shortened the line from the night camp to the lookout camp by changing the telephone wire running from Lake Moxie to Bald Mountain, changing the trail and cutting bushes. Also, on account of a lightning striking there was considerable damage where dishes and the windows and door had to be replaced. The stove was badly damaged, but they managed to make it do for the season, but had plans to have a new one the following year. The watchman was Richard Morris.
In 1918, the materials were purchased for a tower to be erected in 1919.
In 1919, a 12 foot steel tower was erected.
In 1920, a US Geological Survey placed a benchmark directly under the fire tower.
In 1924, a report was received at the office of the state forestry department of the finding of the body of Richard Morris, watchman at the lookout station on Moxie Bald Mountain, hanging in the lookout tower. Morris was a native of the Forks. The report to the forestry department was made by John Comber, chief warden at Parlin pond, and he and a party of men were understood to be on their way to the mountain to bring back the body. It is thought that Morris committed suicide, although he was not known to have any motive for so doing.
In 1955, a survey team visited and mentions the telephone lines and a lower cabin about ten minutes from the summit.
In 1961, the cab was replaced.
In 1996, the second tower was removed from the mountain.
