Lookout History
In 1918, a tower was built by the state in co-operation with the Federal Forest Service, by which $250 of funds were furnished under the Weeks Law. A telephone connection was also under construction on Kittatinny Ridge near Culvers Lake.
In 1919, the new station started up in April.
In 1934, a new tower was built by the CCC.
In 1954, the observer Robert Jennings was working in the tower when five windows were shot out of the tower. For an hour and a half, the tower was used as target practice by local kids not knowing that there was someone inside the 60-foot high tower. He waved his handkerchief to warn the shooters the tower was occupied, to no avail. Somehow he was not hurt. Police were investigating.
In 2021, the fire observer Nick Valerio works eight-hour shifts in the 8x8 ft. tower. The 45 foot high fire tower is manned by the New Jersey Forest Fire Service during the fall and spring. You can climb up the stairs to get a great view and some photo opportunities.
Located in the Stokes State Forest on Sunrise Mountain, this is the states oldest tower site, originally called the Normanook Fire Tower. A view of the entire Stokes State forest and also broad stretches of Pike county, PA. and Orange county, N.Y. may be seen from it.
