Lookout History
In 1941, a team from the Coast and Geodetic Survey visited the summit placing benchmarks. No mentions of any structures at that time. They did use (likely build) a 15-foot pole tower to make their survey lines.
In 1951, the steel Pleasant Pond Mountain tower was moved to Barren Mountain.
In 1955, a team from the Coast and Geodetic Survey visited and described the tower as a Maine Forest Service lookout tower that is constructed of four steel legs with an 8 foot square house on top that is painted white, and about 40 feet in height.
In 1965 there was an active lookout man working according to a AT hiker journal.
The tower is still standing but no cab.
Barren Mountain is the first big peak along the 100-mile wilderness section of the Appalachian Trail. The cab is gone but the tower remains.
