It is hard to describe what it is like to arrive at Abol Bridge. Basically, it is like finishing the Appalachian Trail without actually finishing. You will undoubtedly have already had numerous hikers congratulating you on your accomplishment. All that is left is Baxter State Park. Because you must reserve your next camping site at this point for Katahdin, you are basically deciding your finish date in advance. On the trail just past Abol Bridge, there is a worker for Baxter State Park stationed who will coordinate with you the last days of your thru-hike. By the time you reach this checkpoint, you basically know the rules because of all the trail discussions and have a game plan in place. The hike through Baxter is nice with lots of river views and use of old abandoned roads for smooth travel. Then the trail hits more lakes just before hitting Katahdin Stream Campground and your assigned camping location. For me, I did not have to deal with the camping process because I had arrangements to be picked up at Katahdin and camp in Millinocket with friends and family. But, I definitely talked about the process with many people and the park ranger the morning (and night before) I passed the checkpoint. Baxter State Park is managed like no other park I have ever been too, but that is a rant for some other time.
