Lookout History:
In 1924, a 30-foot pole platform was constructed on the summit.
In 1926, the following was reported by The Forest Worker.
During a serious blowup on the Quartz Creek fire, the fire jumped the Priest River and in an hour was rolling toward White Tail, threatening to burn the lookout and destroy the entire Jack Pine Flats beyond. The men on the lookout fled for their lives, leaving their belongings behind. During the night, however, the fire subsided and the lookouts returned to their station. In two days this fire was trenched and under control. A part of the old White Tail road that had served as a buffer to swerve the fire from its rush toward the lookout was used as a part of the fire line.
In 1928, a log cabin living quarters was added.
In 1934, a 40-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab was built.
In 1936, the Newport Miner reported that Bobbie Pearce, Eldrith Hail and Bobbie Adams went up to White Tail Butte on their bicycles on a Thursday where Jay Pearce is located at the lookout. They returned Saturday some tired boys.
In 1959, the tower was destroyed.
