Slumber Mountain/Peak Lookout Site

This is a short hike to a low elevation summit that is covered in trees. The route is probably used most by hunters who are likely the ones doing some maintenance on clearing a trail along the old roadway. Someday, the summit might get harvested offering some views.

Lookout History
Drive Highway 31 north of Metaline Falls toward Canada. Take the signed Slumber Mountain Road to the right. After a mile or so is a major road to the right. Turn right, and hit a gate. This gate is closed from December 1 to July 1 for wildlife habitat. If open, proceed for a quarter mile before hitting another gate and road abandonment.
Was used as a patrol point in a period when decaying snags became a critical hazard following the fires of the twenties. Kresek

In 1932, Lawrence McKay started building a 40-foot pole tower with 7-foot by 7-foot cab on the summit. Below was a tent cabin. The site was abandoned in the 1940s.

On July 18, 1935, members of the Sullivan Lake CCC camp were called out to fight a small fire near the Slumber peak lookout station.
