McClure Mountain Lookout Site

WillhiteWeb.com
Kresek reports a frame cabin built in 1930. That is all we got, no maps or images showing the lookout. Today there are numerous communication towers on top and evidence of many previous towers so it is difficult to pinpoint which spot the cabin could have been located. The highest and most likely is a rocky knob at the far east point. Views are pretty nice but cameras watching you and radio waves make the summit uncomfortable.

Lookout Elevation: 4,600 feet
Elevation Gain: 1,000 feet, 300 on return
Hiking Distance: 2 miles
County: Okanogan
Route:
A nice motorcycle trail goes the whole way. Since the trail is motorcycle, it is steep in places but at least there is no brush. The trail also goes over peak 4616 which has over 1,000 feet of prominence.
Access:
From Highway 20 in Twisp, take Second Avenue/Twisp River Road. After 0.2 miles, veer left onto May Street immediately looking for Lookout Mountain Road at the same turn as May Street. Go about 3.5 miles to a left onto FR225, no sign but a gate is there. The gate is usually open by May but I do not know for sure. This seasonal gate was open May 7, 2022 when we visited. If the gate is closed, you can just drive further up the road and pick a cross country route up to the ridge and still get to McClure. It seems some kind of timber sale activity may take place along the access road and start of the route in the future.
