Easy Ridge Lookout Site

WillhiteWeb.com
Built in 1934, this was an L-5 cab atop a shoulder of Easy Ridge. Wesley Brown helped string the telephone line, clear trail and shingle the roof. He believes the carpenter was Paul van Cruyninger. The lookout was placed because it had a better view of the Chilliwack Valley than did Copper Mountain Lookout. In 1935, panoramic images were taken in late September. Rarely is the lookout in the pictures but for some reason, the structure was captured by the photographer. A trail was built to the lookout to get the supplies there as climbers report using the trail in 1936. The lookout was never staffed after it was built but used on an emergency basis. The Aircraft Warning Service considered using it in 1942 but passed. In 1962 some mountaineers called it the “abandoned Easy Ridge Lookout Trail”. A ranger who visited it in 1969 said there were still cedar shingle shavings in a kindling box, left by the workman who built it. The firewatchman at Copper Mountain Lookout reported in 1972 that the Easy Ridge Lookout was leaning at at bad angle. The lookout was burned down in 1973.

Hike over Hannegan Pass, drop into the Chilliwack valley and hope to find the unmarked Easy Ridge trail, which starts with a crossing of the river with no bridge. More to come once I visit.
