Camp Kelcema (Camp Mathews) 1922 - 1947
In 1922, the scouts acquired a lease on 4 acres of Forest Service land at Lake Kelcema. Over the years a lodge, several adirondacks and a swim beach developed. In 1944 longtime Scout Executive Capt. R.G. Mathews retired. In his honor the camp was renamed Camp Mathews. The camp was known for its beautiful surroundings, safe bathing facilities, comfortable lodge and adequate sleeping accommodations. The only problem with the camp was taking in supplies. The distance improved when the Mountain Loop highway reached Silverton but there was still 4 miles to bring in supplies by pack mules. Due to this, the Evergreen Area Council replaced the camp with Camp Sevenich in 1948.
