Johns River Wildlife Area
John's River Wildlife Area offers a short hike in a tidal estuary preserve. The paved trail goes to a observation shelter but you can continue on an unpaved trail reaching some forests. Do this hike the next time you are heading to Westport, the trailhead is just a few minutes off the highway between Aberdeen and Westport, just past the Ocean Spray cranberry plant. Animals to lookout for are roosevelt elk, black-tailed deer, black bear, coyote, bobcat, muskrat, and rabbits. Birds are mostly ducks, geese, crows, great blue herons, hummingbirds, robins, warblers, goldfinches, swallows, snipe, gulls, forest grouse and band-tailed pigeon. There is a small boat ramp if you wanted to kayak or canoe the river.
