Kohunlich, a Mayan ruin site, is located in Quintana Roo, about 1.5 hours from Mahahual and 2 hours from Costa Maya. It is a significant archaeological site that showcases unique architectural features built around 500 AD and is famous for its Temple of the Masks. There are distinctive stone masks on the Pyramid of the Masks, which are about 8 feet high. It is believed the city prospered as an important trade hub connecting the Yucatan Peninsula with the Peten region of Guatemala. The city was eventually abandoned around 1100 AD. The architecture style is somewhat different from other Mayan sites and the site is located in a scenic backdrop of subtropical rainforest. Kohunlich is accessible via guided tours from Mahahual and Costa Maya, making it a popular excursion for cruise passengers.

There are well-preserved mask carvings on both sides of the stairs.
The temple of the masks is half covered to protect the carvings.
We did have a guide but we soon ditched out and went on our own.
One of the mask carvings in the temple of the masks.
