Boca De Tomatlan to Quimixto Hike
Access
Take an uber, taxi or bus to Boca De Tomatlan. This is a 25 minute drive south of Puerto Vallarta on Highway 200. The highway leaves the ocean at Boca and goes inland.
Hiking Distance: 1.24 miles one-way to Colonitos Beach
Hiking Distance: 3 miles one-way to Las Animas Beach
Hiking Distance: 5 miles one-way to Quimixto
After some ups and downs, in a bit over a mile you reach Colonitos Beach. This is a nice spot to relax and swim. Since boats can still reach the beach, you probably will have company. The trail climbs the rocks on the far side of the beach, continuing to the next location. Small beaches can be found on the trail that are secluded and nobody will be there.
This small fishing village is where the Horcones River hits the ocean and is the main port for all the water taxis that go to the secluded beaches to the south. To find the start of the hiking trail, walk the river inland until you reach the bridge crossing the river. Go over and turn right. The trail is not signed but follow the path most obvious and you should be ok as it works around houses before leaving town.

Boca De Tomatlan
The trail continues from the end of the beach at Animas. At first, it is not very scenic as it travels behind several houses but upon reaching Quimixto, there is a nice beach. A pathway cuts to the soccer field and then into the heart of town where you drop down to the port dock to pick up a water taxi back to Boca De Tomatlan for 100 pesos.
Next up are these beaches with more development. The trail just drops down to the beach and utilizes the beach as the route. Lots of food and drinks are available. By hiking here early, you can find these locations pretty secluded. The majority of tourists do not arrive until mid-day by boat. Most hikers stop here but for the hardy, you should finish the trail by hiking to Quimixto.
