This is the fourth largest glacier in Iceland that covers more than 270 square miles and reaches a thickness of as much as 2,460 feet. The glacier drops down nearly to sea level where you can get a glimpse of the terminus by a short trail. The glacier sits atop the notorious and explosive volcano, Katla, with an average eruption every 50 years.
