While visiting this park, I knew I was missing something. The campground was packed with backpackers and hikers, I wondered why. Svartifoss Falls is a tourist hike to a 65 foot waterfall with black columnar basalt formations. I learned later you can continue hiking 11 miles to view Morsarfoss, the highest waterfall in Iceland, although you do not get really close to it. Others at the campground I learned were climbing the highest mountain in Iceland (Hvannadalshnukur). Several other trails take you to other very scenic destinations. Back at the campground, at the Skaftafell Visitors Center were lots of groups gearing up for glacier walking tours. Another trail leaves the visitors center going up to the Skaftafell Glacier. Our weather sucked or I think we would have ended up here for several days. If I ever come back to do some climbing, I see myself here.
Hiking Distance: One mile one-way
