The Rio Secreto is a relatively newly-discovered underground river right in an area teaming with tourists between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. The underground river is stunning with thousands of dramatic stalactites and stalagmites in limestone caverns. This is a truly unique experience and is totally worth your time. A guide will be with you the entire time and makes it possible to witness this river cave system with no cave experience necessary. At the parking lot, you get outfitted with a wet suit, pdf and headlamp. Lockers are provided and there is no personal photography in the caves. The tour starts with a walk in the Mayan jungle to the cave entrance. Based on water levels, there are several different tours among the labyrinth of caves. Guided groups are small in number. The water includes wading and swimming at times but your life preserver keeps you floating. A photographer comes along with the guide and takes all the pictures. If you want your pictures, they can be purchased at a very high price each. If you want all your pictures, it costs more than the entire tour. After the tour, there is usually a buffet lunch.
