Depending on the age of the kids, pick the most appropriate tools. I would say that age 12 would be a good cut-off between plastic vs. steel knifes.

It is practically indispensable in daily living. Every home has one, either in the kitchen, the work room, or the desk drawer. Never take a knife of any kind anywhere it might not be allowed, such as to school or school activities
