Wilhites of Oldham and Jefferson Counties of Kentucky

HOME
This area is probably the largest migration spot for Wilhite families since the move to Madison/Culpepper Virginia from Germania. There were two big families but several others from different lines of Wilhites made this move too (it seems). See entire page for everyone. If you have evidence of anything being incorrect on this page, please contact me and I will look into it.

Jesse Wilhoit (1739-1823)
In 1808, at age 71, Jesse and Mildred moved to Jefferson County, Kentucky with several cousins. Jesse brought his whole family including his 2 oldest sons who had families (Evan and Simeon). His 5 children younger children were Allen, Margaret, Zachariah, Larkin and Lucy. We find Jesse on the 1810 census living near his sons families, Simeon and Evan. In the 1820 census, Jesse is living next to his sons families, Evan and Larkin. (Simeon had died)
Shortly after arriving in Jefferson County, Jesse Wilhoite of 1739 is recorded in 1810 as owning 7 slaves, while none of his kids owned slaves. It can be presumed that he brought the slaves from Virginia. According to historians in this part of Kentucky, slaves were kept in family units. It is likely that the original slaves brought from Virginia were in a family unit, and continued to have children. By 1820, Jesse had around 27 slaves. Also, Jesse’s 4 living sons also had between 1 and 10 slaves each. By 1860, there were black farmers (possibly free) living next door to James. With the abolishment of slavery in 1864, all future census records give names to all black individuals instead of just a number. Based on family stories and census records, many of the slaves were later employed by the Wilhite families after the war. Census records show former slave families occupations listed as working for a private family as a Laundress, Nurse Child and Housework for the women and Farm Hand, Farm Labor, Butler and Chauffeur for the men.
Allen Wilhoit (1789-1863)
Son
Allen was born in Virginia, but moved to Kentucky when he was 18 with his dad Jesse and all the others. After about 10 years, he got married, had a homestead and had kids.
This 1879 map shows several Wilhoyte farms between Pond Creek and Harrods Creek where we have dozens of land sale court documents from the 1830s in this area with Wilhoyte names. This map shows four families: J. (James) Wilhoyte, Z. (Zachariah) Wilhoyte, Mrs. Wilhoyte and T.L. Wilhoyte.
This map is of Oldham County but the Jefferson County line is right there and this area was Jefferson County prior to 1823, hence census records show them all living in both Jefferson and Oldham Counties at different periods of time.

Zachariah Wilhoit (1791-1835)
Son
Zachariah was born in Virginia, but moved to Kentucky when he was 15 with his dad Jesse. Do not confuse with the other Zachariah in Oldham County (Zachariah 1797-1855)
Brownsboro, Oldham County
James Leon Wilhoyte
Son of James Sims Wilhoyte and Lucy Ann Wilhoyte (their parents were brothers, Allen and Zachariah).
James Leon only lived about 30 years and never married so we have few records of his life. We do have the stories shared by Stephanie, told to her from her Great Grandmother about a Leon Wilhoyte. It appears there was a relationship at a young age between Leon Wilhoyte and one of the girls his family employed. The two families in 1880 were living around Harrods Creek, in Oldham County, Kentucky. On the census, you can find young Leon age 14, and a young July Smith age 13, living just a few homes away from each other. They likely knew each other for several years before having a child together.

The names and stories shared by Stephanie all matched with the census records confirming the timing and location of this multiracial couple. For now, we are assuming this was a consensual relationship based on stories passed down. We are left today to make assumptions and it is likely the two were immediately separated, possibly sent to live with family elsewhere. I say this because we are having trouble locating them after the birth of their daughter. Records are hinting that June did get married shortly after to an unknown person but she possibly died before age 30. Their daughter (Catherine) stayed with mom as her last name was Smith. Catherine got married young and there is no records of her mom (July Smith) after age 13. Leon also only lived to about age 30, so the two of them are a real mystery worth exploring. (July Smith may have been Julie Smith.)
Born: 1866 Goshen, Oldham Co., Kentucky
Died: 1895 Brownsboro, Oldham Co., Kentucky
Story of James Leon Wilhoyte and July Smith
This history made possible by collaboration with Stephanie , who contacted me, a descended of July Smith in the story below. Thanks cousin!

Riley Smith and Evaline
Parents of July/Julie Smith
Riley and Evaline were married in 1860, right before the Civil War started. He was probably 20 and she was 16 or so. Locating them on the 1860 and 1870 census has been difficult. Based on family stories, they were slaves at a Wilhoyte residence, but it is difficult to pinpoint which farm as several Wilhoyte families were all living in the same spot. In 1880, we find Riley and Evaline with a son (George) and two daughters (Ann and July). They are living next to a James and Mildred Wilhoyte, cousins to James Sims and Lucy Wilhoyte (the parents of Leon Wilhoyte). James Sims and Lucy were living a few farms away, based on them being about 2 pages away on the census. So it seems likely, that Riley was working for James and Mildred (not James Sims and Lucy). In fact, Riley’s son George Smith would be still living next to Mildred Wilhoyte in the 1920 census, 40 years later. This backs the stories that the two families, Wilhoytes and Smiths, were still talking and encountering each other for many years, generations really.
Parents of Riley Smith
I have spent considerable time trying to track down where Riley Smith came from. Unfortunately, the time period to search is 1850 and 1860 when records for slaves or even free black men were sparse. If I had to guess, he and his parents are listed on a slave schedule (which is basically a census for slaves with no names, just the slave owners and numbers of slaves broken into categories like male, female, age, etc.). If I knew which Wilhoyte family for sure owned Riley, we would at least have that document. To me, it seems likely that the line beyond Riley co-exists with the Wilhoytes all the way back to when they came from Virginia to Kentucky. So that would be either Riley’s father or grandfather having come from Virginia with everybody.
Evan Wilhoit (1787-1865)
Son
Evan was taxed in Jefferson Co. KY from 1809 to 1824.
Larkin Wilhoit (1794-1833)
Son
Larkin was born in Virginia, moving to Kentucky when he was 12 with his dad Jesse.

Joseph Wilhoite (1784-1855)
John Wilhoit (1745 - 1815)
One of three John Wilhoits born in 1745. Two of them served in the Revolutionary War. This one served for two months under Captain Robert Miller. His first marriage with Margaret Smith is sometimes written as Nancy Smith. Margaret was used in the document "Genealogy of Yager & Wilhoit" which is 25 pages focused on just their line, so I use Margaret. In 1784, Fayette County, a land survey for 920 acres for John Wilhoit and also a survey for Aaron (likely his son) for 851.5 acres was on the same date. Around 1808, the same time as everyone else, it is believed he moved to Jefferson County. He is found on the 1810 Louisville, Jefferson, Kentucky census. His death is four years later in 1814.
