This trip features three locations. First, starting in the quiet community of Mats Mats Bay. The bay is fairly deep inland with a scenic forested channel to paddle to reach Puget Sound. This is best paddled when the tide is going out as quite a bit of water is pushing in when the tide comes in. The second feature is Colvos Rocks. These rocks are popular with seals and we found our kayak surrounded by these guys. The final feature is to kayak tour Port Ludlow. The port is full of homes, condos and boats anchored in the bay. The forested hillsides make for some dramatic scenery and a paddle around the twin islands is needed. For this tour, you could do a one-way trip pretty easy if you had 2 vehicles, or maybe even a bike stashed. We did round trip, including a side trip north and the total mileage was around 12 miles. Mats Mats Bay boat launch has free parking and is rarely busy. People have launched at Port Ludlow although they do not advertise it. Port Ludlow also has kayak rentals so there are usually vacationers in the harbor kayaking around for fun.
