Mineral Mountain Lookout Site

In 1928, Mineral Mountain had a lookout camp. Newspapers reported that “Fred Dahl who had been doing maintenance work at First Thought lookout is transferred to Mineral mountain as lookout man.” That summer, the lookout man spotted several fires in the vicinity of Boyds, in deserted ranch buildings. Rangers Duffield and Vincent put out the fires he spotted.

In 1929, a 12x12 foot cabin was built. The lookout man was J. Williams of Kettle Falls. The Republic News-Miner reported on June 7 that “Lloyd Hougland left Tuesday for Orient where he will assist in the construction of a lookout house on Mineral mountain. This is a new lookout point which overlooks the lower country along the Columbia River from Marcus to Northport.” Ed Smith of Orient and Bud Williams of Kettle Falls packed the lumber for the lookout. This lumber was packed in full lengths with horses in tandem over a rough trail 6 miles in length according to newspapers. By October, Mike Moran was completing the Lookout building

In the 1940s, the building was removed or destroyed.
