Little Vulcan Mountain Lookout Site
WillhiteWeb.com: Fire Lookouts
This area is reported to be a lookout camp from 1916 to 1935. Given how large the summit area is, pinpointing the exact location will be tough. Because this low elevation lookout likely wanted a good view of the valley, one could expect the spot to be at the far south end where there are good views down into the town. Topo maps show a spring below this location as well (and someone might want to drop below the point to a bench next to the spring and check for evidence).
Access:
From Curlew, just north of town, turn west on Vulcan Mountain Road. This major road is paved at first, then becomes an excellent wide gravel road. After passing some homes, it will come to a major Y intersection. A sign should point right to Vulcan Mountain. From this point, use my map. The roads are really good in this part of the National Forest. The last mile might get more bumpy for regular cars, if so, just walk whenever.
Lookout Elevation: Likely around 4,850 feet
Hiking Distance: Half mile
Elevation Gain: 30 feet
Access: Ok roads, most cars should be fine
Route:
The forest is open and easy to walk, old roads shown on maps are abandoned. There are numerous cow trails everywhere. Your biggest issue will be running into cows, if so, show dominance and they usually go away. I went to 4 or 5 places that I would think a camp could be. The late Bob Pfeifer also looked around but found nothing.
