Langille Ridge

This Langille Ridge site was photographed on July 18, 1934. Langille could have been a patrol point for McCoy Peak Lookout. This highpoint was along the trail to reach McCoy Peak and both locations were photographed on the same day in 1934. A 1937 Forest Service recreation map shows a lookout building at the photographed point on Langille Ridge called Langille LO. If this was in error, it would be the only error I’ve found among 10 similar recreation maps of the 1930s. If I had to guess, there were plans to build a lookout but it never materialized.

Interesting that it doesn't show a trail connecting the ridge between the two but separate trails climbing up from the valley bottom.
Showing point on ridge where the panoramics were taken.

In November 2019 I visited the site and found no evidence of any former structures or camps. The summit does have a flat area that could hold a building but again, nothing was found.

A motorcycle trail can be used from the McCoy Peak trail, passing Grasshopper Lake. The other option is to use the Langille Ridge Trail from Yellowjacket Creek, the original access for McCoy. This is an enjoyable route that few hikers visit. Use map provided to find access for the Yellowjacket access. The road to the trailhead has overgrown (still a motorcycle trail) so now the hike is longer, as shown on the map.

Flat area at the summit ready for a building. This smoke blew in from Morton for 20 minutes until it passed through, then it was clear again.

Goats were my company on this trek, no humans to be found.
