Kelly Hill was used for observation sometime in the 1930s. The cabin was 10x12 or 14x14 depending on the source. We know by 1940 (see letter below) the site was abandoned and the structure was just sitting there. In the year 2000, Irene Potter visited and the some walls were still standing. There was a timber sale around 2008 removing the timber at the lookout site. A timber sale in 2016 on the other side of the road from the lookout has opened some big views. All that remains are shingles and boards getting buried below an increasing thickening duff layer.

Kelly Hill Lookout Site

Several possible routes exist. I drove from Highway 12 at Brady. Drove north on the following roads: Middle Satsop Road to Matlock-Brady Road, to Boundary Road, to Kelly Road. Once on Kelly, only go about a mile and find the wide gravel road on the left. Kelly continues paved but goes to some homes and ends (even though you will regain it) This gravel road left is not signed but it is the access to the National Forest. On FS maps, it shows as road 2153. This wide road (old RR route) skirts just west of Kelly Road until reaching private timberlands. Where the abandoned Kelly Road comes back into the current road, there is a gated road, signed 6850. Park at the gate and hike up 6850, which is still labeled as Kelly Road on some maps since Kelly Road once ended at the lookout site.
Access
This road is steep, but it gets to the lookout site quickly. Avoid 2 right turns before the final right up to the lookout site. Some of the wood from the lookout was even spilled onto the road cut.
