Jackass Butte Lookout Site
In 1936, panoramic images were taken from this site. The images say the photos were taken at 5 feet above the ground, plus 4.5 feet for the camera stand. There are 2 cars, a phone line and lots of wood scraps in the images.
In 1939, the L-5 cab from Chiliwist Butte Lookout was moved to this location.
In 1942, the site was utilized by the AWS for spotting enemy aircraft. Activated March 16, 1942 until deactivated on July 1, 1943.
In 1956, the USGS placed a benchmark on the lookout house. They said the abandoned 14 x 14-foot white lookout house was on the highest point of the top of the hillside, with the peak of the roof at 13.6 feet above ground. They also said there was another building on the same hill about 500 feet west and 150 feet lower in elevation.
In 1963, the L-5 cab was removed or destroyed.
