Churchill Mountain Lookout Site
In 1923, a tower was built in June.
In 1927, a 7x7 foot cab was added to the 40 foot pole tower. There was also a ground cabin living quarters at this time. The work was described in February 1928: "A glass enclosed cage was constructed on the Churchill Mountain lookout tower in the Orient District last fall. Mr. Hougland was the head carpenter, Ed Smith packed the lumber and materials to the point, and everybody helped how and where they could. This job lasted into November in spite of extremely bad weather. If you think doing carpenter work on top of a tower on the highest point of the highest mountains in your district in October and November, is a pleasant job--try it some stormy fall. The boys deserve a lot of credit for finishing the job. The lookouts, who sit there in comfort next season instead of hanging on by their eye teeth in the winds, will, no doubt, appreciate it fully." In 1928, the lookout was Morris Ewell. The Bart Jarvis family of Republic were visitors that year (family related).
In 1933, the lookout was Clarence Rhode.
In 1938, a 53-foot timber tower with L-4 cab was built.
In 1945, the lookout was Patricia Langdon. Her parents and sister visited and stayed at the lookout on several weekends. Her sister Toni remained to spend some extra time with her sister on occasion. At season end, Patricia went to Holy Names academy in Spokane.
In 1955, the tower was moved to Quartz Mountain Lookout near Republic.
