Baker AWS Site
Located on Quinault Tribe land, Baker was probably named for the large Baker Prairie just to the south. Wreck Creek and the Moclips River could hide aircraft coming off the coast, with plains easily flying low over the large Baker Prairie. If the plains turned north, they would funnel through a narrow gap where section 13 is located, where the Baker AWS site was placed, waiting to catch them. Unfortunately, I don’t have any documents saying where in Section 13 the observers were stationed. There are a few high knobs but a logged off point could have worked just as well. We are lucky to have three pictures of the camp, rare for AWS stations. This area was logged off in the early 1950’s and again around 2017.
