Fairmount Playfield - West Seattle
The small open space of Fremont Playground sits off the side of Fairmount Way SW. There is a jr. soccer field and a softball field. Kids play equipment includes swings, a big rope webbing climbing structure, a ferry boat and another large play structure. The outside of the restrooms has been decorated with a Native American mural. Next to the park is the Fairmount Park Elementary School which was closed down in 2007. There is talk of bringing the Fairmount Park Elementary back online in 2014. The school was constructed in 1964 and occupied for 43 years until its closure in 2007. Fairmount Playground dates back to 1907, but acquisition of the five-acre site by the Seattle Parks Department occurred through condemnation proceedings in 1955-57. To accommodate development, a number of houses along 38th Avenue SW and Fauntleroy Avenue SW near SW Brandon Street were condemned and moved, and the playfield site subsequently was graded, filled and improved with ballfields and play equipment.
