Greenwater Lakes - Lost Lake Trail
Washington Hiking & Climbing
Popular with beginners and fishermen, the Greenwater Lakes Trail is a relatively easy valley trail through some spectacular old-growth forest, with lakes as destinations. The first lakes are the Greenwater Lakes, just 2 easy miles up the trail, surrounded by many campsites. But for some extra effort, the hike continues a bit further to a trail split. Left to Echo Lake, right to Lost Lake. This report covers Lost Lake, a tree-ringed body of water trapped like a bathtub, its outlet is underground!
Take State 410 east from Enumclaw roughly 20 miles (a mile past the Greenwater Fire Station) to Greenwater Road #70. Turn left and follow FR 70 for 9.6 miles to the trailhead sign & right turn onto Road #7033. Follow to the end at the paved parking lot.
Access:
The trail starts out in a young forest but within a few minutes, you are in old growth. The trees in this valley bottom was somehow saved because just past the eyes view, on both hill sides above, the slopes were clear-cut. In route to Greenwater Lakes, the trail crosses the river about half way there and again right before the first lake. After the second lake, find a third crossing and many campsites. Now the trail heads up to the trail fork, where a right turn uphill takes you through a narrow valley toward Lost Lake. Within a few miles, another small forested lake appears below the trail, Quinn Lake. Next the trail passes through some rocky volcanic meadows, too rocky for trees to easily take hold, some elusive white pine you will find. Finally, the trail reaches Lost Lake. There are many campsites along the West side, notice the surrounding forest cleared clean of anything that can be used as firewood. A minor trail skirts the entire lakeshore if you want to get different perspectives of the lake or fish.
