Alex Fitzgerald died in September while hiking down the Muir Snowfield on Mt. Rainier during stormy white-out conditions. He became disoriented and succumbed to the elements.

Aron Christensen and his dog were murdered by gunshot on August 20 while hiking on the Walupt Lake Trail. A young hunter was eventually tracked down and he confessed to the shooting thinking Aron and his dog were wild animals. No charges were filed by Lewis County.
