Gig Harbor
Gig Harbor is less than an hour from Seattle, just across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge in the South Puget Sound. It promotes itself as a quaint village with commercial and recreational fishing boats in a scenic harbor. The surrounding area is full of homes of people who commute into Tacoma for work. But, the center of town in the waterfront district is a local tourist spot, a place to stroll, look at art galleries, restaurants, boutiques and even a few museums. Renting a motor boat or kayak is very popular, but as always for travel in this area, pick nice weather day! The lighthouse that marks the entrance to the harbor is only reachable by watercraft. The waterfront even has a nice little park, and in summer hosts a concert series and has outdoor movies. For the best view of the bay with Mt. Rainier, do the Finholm View Climb. Off Harborview Drive and Franklin Street, 100 stairs scale the hillside to the view platforms. Other nice scenic locations are:
Kopachuck State Park has a scenic state park with a location on the water looking over to the Olympic Mountains.
