Garrison Hill Lookout

The Garrison Hill Lookout was located just inside the Fort Lewis Boundary, near the area of Spanaway. Although you would never know it while standing at the base, the tower had a commanding view across all of the South Puget Sound area. Not much of anything remains, although I found a concrete foundation for something. The grass could be covering something else but it is really overgrown. The lookout site is located just off a paved public access road (8th Avenue) that runs across the east edge of the base but there really isn't much to see from the road, (or the actual site). It seems so unusual to find railroad tracks running just a few hundred feet from the former lookout site. How rare is that! The Lookout Inventory says it was a wooden tower built in 1942, rebuilt in 1957 as a 100 foot wooden tower with 8x8 foot cab, then abandoned in 1971. The image below of the lookout was shared on a Spanaway facebook page.
