Fort Lewis Fire Lookouts
This page highlights the former lookouts located on Fort Lewis lands, now known as Joint Base Lewis-McChord. These were most of the lowest elevation lookouts in Washington. I found access to these spots while working for the Army as a Forestry Technician & wildland firefighter during the end of summer 2013. You can bet I arrived with my maps in hand, ready to find these 6 locations whenever possible. Luckily, two of the timber sales we were working were located right where I needed them to be, at the 2 furthest out lookout sites. Of the 6 possible locations, 5 lookout sites were found, but one (the Nisqually Lookout) I am still uncertain as to its existence. All these lookouts are located outside the high security zone of JBLM, but they are still located on military reservation land. Access to all 6 locations could be reached without passing through any gates. But, you would be passing many signs stating that you are entering an authorized personnel area only and will be trespassing, and prosecuted. It is very likely you could encounter military vehicles and training operations. Do not attempt access without permission. Permission is possible. Contact the Adventure Center at 253-967-7744 or Google it for more information. Some of these areas are open for hunting, fishing, ATV use, firewood collection and horseback riding but permits must be obtained.
