If you find yourself in Tempe, the downtown core is small enough to walk around to the numerous sights. Although my short visit was without a car and during a heatwave, I still found my way around the town to visit the following locations.
The Tempe Town Lake offers five miles of shoreline surrounding the lake where people run, walk and bike. In the water are people who have rented kayaks, paddle boards or those really slow paddle boats. There are more than 50 special events annually at Tempe Town Lake.

Many citys have parks, this city park is a mini-mountain offering sweeping views of not just down to the city but far off to many Phoenix suburbs. The trail is short enough that even on hot days, an early morning ascent will get you up and down before temps get too bad. Several trails lead to the summit.
Hayden Butte Preserve
Stroll around the university campus, for myself from the Northwest, it was fascinating to see the buildings that were basically built under the ground.
Arizona State University & Art Museum
Located along the lake, the Tempe History Museum is free and has numerous events and exhibits.
