Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Ngorongoro holds the largest un-flooded and unbroken caldera in the world. The crater is 12 miles across, 2,000 feet deep and 116 square miles in area. Except for during the dry season, the crater is packed full of wildlife including elephants, rhinos, cheetahs, lions, leopards, hyenas, serval cats, jackals, bush backs, elands, water bucks, wildebeest, many antelope, and a large variety of birds. There are 55-65 permanent lion residents. Entering the crater is an experience as you climb the high rim of the crater in a jungle, pass through a guarded gate at the top, then drop down below the jungle into the vast open expanse of the grassy crater.
