Located in the Forbes State Forest, Mt. Davis Natural Area, the highpoint is completely forested but a fire tower allows views just over the tree tops. To access, it is just a short walk from the parking area, past a closed gate. Views are of the surrounding Laurel Highlands. There are other overlooks for views in the area as well but the tower is the highest point and near the base of the tower are multiple bronze plaques with information and history.

In 1934, the forest fire observation tower was erected by the Pennsylvania Department of Forests and Waters, likely via the Civilian Conservation Corps. At that time, the name was Negro Mountain. The name derived to give honor to a slave who was killed here by Indians while accompanying a hunting party headed by Colonel Thomas Cresat about year 1750. When attacked by the Indians, the slave sacrificed his life so that a party of hunters he accompanied might escape from a band of marauding Indians.
