Black Mountain, the Kentucky highpoint is owned by a coal company. So being private property, they do not exactly encourage visitors. BUT, the company does tolerate visitors, as long as you sign a waiver. The area is an active coal mining area so you must stick to the road. The company is concerned about being held liable if one of the coal mine tunnels under Black Mountain should collapse. You can drive the road although a few places might scrape a car with little clearance. The walk would be easy and short. Just before the summit is a giant FAA radar station. On the summit is an old fire lookout tower but the cab is gone. Special thanks to the Highpointers Club for getting access set. Years ago, permission was only granted on certain days, with advance notice, in company with a guide.
