Mount Sunflower - Kansas State Highpoint
As you might expect, the highest point of Kansas is nothing more than a high hill, just on the other side of the state line from Colorado. Mount Sunflower is hardly a mountain but that is the name. The summit is scattered with art work, probably by locals. Although located on private property, the owner encourages people to visit. I dragged a bunch of family to the summit while caravanning between Denver and Eastern Kansas during a family reunion. There was more adventure trying to find Mound Sunflower than actually visiting the high spot.
Access:
Distance: Drive-up
Elevation: 4,039 feet
Access Rating: Good Gravel/Dirt
Signs sometimes show roads to Mount Sunflower but you can't count on them being there, most were gone when I visited. From I-80, take exit 17 in Goodland Kansas, which is route 27 south. Go south 17 miles to a right turn on the BB dirt road. Follow this road west about 12 miles, then turn south on the 6 road for 4 miles. At 4 miles is another dirt road that goes 2.8 miles to a T intersection. Go left for one mile, then a right and one more mile to the entrance gate to Mount Sunflower. Other dirt road options exist as well.
