This section starts at the Idaho border near Gateway Park sticking near the freeway the first few miles with no shade and occasional glimpses of the river. It leaves the freeway going behind the Trutina 55+ community on one side and the Spokane River on the other. After passing under Harvard Road, the trail looses signs of surrounding development and is quite natural, often in a forested park like setting. After passing under Sullivan Road, a side trail takes up to the mall area and into the Krispy Cream parking lot. Yum. For an official parking area, continue another 1.4 miles west on the trail.
