Roche Harbor Resort
Roche Harbor is where those who need all the amenities of a city go to experience nature. The resort has many types of accommodations including the Hotel de Haro, the state's oldest continually operating hotel. The 20 rooms have hosted stays for visitors since 1886 with no ac, bathrooms or TVs. With the resort having a spa, free wi-fi throughout and a seasonal barista, you can imagine what kind of guest they are focusing on. Roche Harbor also offers three restaurants located on the waterfront surrounding the inner harbor. They have a serious focus on shopping and weddings too. When guests and visitors do get out, the popular guided tours from the resort include whale watching tours and kayak tours. Both offer likely chances at seeing marine wildlife, including the orca whales everyone wants to see. Another outdoor activity at Roche Harbor is hiking. There is an extensive trail network on and around the property. They traverse a variety of landscapes including woods, pastures, lagoons, quarries, and marshes. Within easy walking distance is the San Juan Islands Sculpture Park. This park is about 20 acres full of outdoor sculptures, (more than 120) made by Northwest artists. Roche Harbor Gardens in the resort center is also popular with gardeners and those who know stuff about formal gardens. There is also a playground for kids, a barbecue area, a off-leash dog park and a heated outdoor pool. These are located near the historic cottages which are a vestige of the company town from 100 years ago. They are on the grassy hillside just outside of the core area of Roche Harbor. For something different, try Bocce. There are two 65-foot, side-by-side courts that were custom-built with crushed oystershells to provide an authentic experience like few places outside of Italy. Both courts are open all day for complimentary use by the guests, with regulation balls and life-size scoring marker on the scene.
