Point No Point
Puget Sound Hiking
Located near the northern tip of the Kitsap Peninsula, Point No Point is a scenic yet very historic location in Puget Sound history. The Point No Point Light House is the oldest lighthouse on Puget Sound, erected in 1879. The point was named by the Wilkes Expedition in 1841, and the 1855 Point No Point Treaty was signed at this location by Territorial Gov. Isaac Stevens and leaders of Chimacum, Skokomish and S'Klallam tribes, ending the Indian wars. Today, the site is the location for people flying kites, fishing for salmon, walking their dogs, hunting for shells, boat watching and building sand castles. Unlike most of the rocky shores on Puget Sound, this beach is huge and all sand, just perfect for picnics. The local natives gave the spot the name of Hahd-skus, meaning long nose. Someone in the Wilkes party jotted in the journal a caustic note that they drew near a point, only to find no point at all. So Wilkes logged it as Point No Point. The lighthouse has been in continuous operation providing navigational aids since its completion in 1879. It is leased from the US Coast Guard by Kitsap County Parks and Recreation. It's listed in the Washington State Heritage Register and the National Register of Historical Places. The lightkeepers house is available as a vacation rental. Tours of the lighthouse are open weekends from April through September. For further explorations, you can explore the 28 acres of wetland behind the lighthouse or hike a mile or so south along the beach. Views extend east across the bluffs of Scatchet Head on the southern tip of Whidbey and beyond Edmonds on the mainland is the spread of Cascade Peaks, stretching south to Mount Rainier.
From Highway 104, take the Hansville Road north 8 miles to the intersection of Hansville Road and Point No Point Road. Turn right onto Point No Point Road and travel to the road end into the park.
