Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area
Yaquina Head is a narrow, coastal headland extending one mile into the Pacific Ocean. The rocks were formed by ancient lava flows. The site has a lighthouse, tidepools, trails and an interpretive center. Wildlife includes whales, seals, murres, cormorants, pelicans and many rocky shore intertidal organisms. The 93 foot tall lighthouse is the tallest in Oregon, the second oldest continuously operating lighthouse, and Oregon's fifth lighthouse. It was first lit on August 20, 1873. You can take tours but they are limited to 16 visitors per hour, first come, first-serve with limited days and hours. Also no young kids allowed as they kept the stairs inside as they were in the 1800's....dangerous. The interpretive center has many exhibits that interpret the natural and human history of Yaquina Head including a full-scale replica of the lighthouse lantern.
